Nurse-Led early mobilization and functional recovery program: Impact on postoperative recovery, complications, and length of hospital stay among patients undergoing major abdominal surgery

Background: Major abdominal surgery is commonly associated with postoperative pain, delayed mobilization, reduced functional capacity, postoperative complications, and prolonged hospitalization. Early mobilization is an important component of postoperative nursing care that can promote physical recovery, restore functional independence, and facilitate earlier discharge. A structured nurse-led approach may enhance patients’ adherence to progressive mobilization and support safe functional recovery. Aim: To evaluate the impact of a nurse-led early mobilization and functional recovery program on postoperative recovery, complications, and length of hospital stay among patients undergoing major abdominal surgery. Subjects and Method: A quasi-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design was conducted among a purposive sample of 100 patients undergoing major abdominal surgery at the General Surgery Department and Surgical Units of Sohag University Hospitals. Data were collected using Tool I: Structured Patient Assessment Tool, Tool II: Quality of Recovery-15 (QoR-15),Tool III: Cumulated Ambulation Score (CAS), and Tool IV: Postoperative Complications Assessment and Hospital Stay Record. The program included preoperative education and postoperative progressive mobilization, beginning with bed exercises and sitting, followed by standing, chair transfer, assisted ambulation, and gradual independent walking according to patients’ clinical condition and tolerance. Breathing exercises, pain-management education, safety precautions, and individualized daily mobility goals were also incorporated.
